A 10-month-old puppy, named Mercy, died despite efforts to save her from extensive injuries. A Dallas man has been indicted for felony cruelty to animals in a case involving a tortured pitbull puppy that outraged people throughout the world.
A Dallas County grand jury indicted DeShawn Brown, 21, on Thursday, said Rachel Raya, spokeswoman for the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.
Brown was arrested April 27, nearly two weeks after his 10-month-old pit bull mix, later called Mercy, was seen running, ablaze, through the parking lot of a north Dallas apartment complex.
Mercy had been stabbed, and burns covered 60 percent of her body, according to reports. She was turned over to Operation Kindness, a non-profit shelter in Carrollton that tries to find homes for abandoned or abused animals.
Mercy died April 23, despite extensive efforts to save her by volunteer veterinarians.
Witnesses told police that the dog belonged to Brown, who was questioned a short time later, the reports said.
He told police he was grilling food on his patio when the puppy accidentally bumped the grill and ignited herself.
Officials interviewed Brown again and he told another story, this time saying he owed money to two guys for an Xbox and they had retaliated by burning his dog, the reports said.
Witnesses, however, said he angrily attacked the puppy because she failed to breed with another dog.
I hope he feels the wrath of every abused pitbull that has ever lived.
