NEW YORK â?? A mother sleeping with her 8-week-old son to protect him from the rats that infested their Bronx apartment inadvertently rolled on top of him, suffocating the infant.

"It's horrible. When I woke up I saw his lips were blue and I started screaming," the mother, Gladys Robles, 42, told the Daily News in Tuesday editions.

"I should have put him in the crib, I should have. I was so scared, scared of the rats," Robles said of the rodents that regularly come through the walls of her $766-a-month Tremont section apartment where she lives with her husband and three other children.

Robles called 911 at 10:24 a.m. Monday but her baby, Christian Nunez, was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Barnabas Hospital.

The landlord, Christopher Hanover, who owns an apartment at the Trump Tower in White Plains, told the News that he wasn't aware of the rat problem at his Bronx building.

"That's news to me," he said. "It wasn't brought to my attention. I heard there was something in the building about a baby today, but I didn't know what."

But the News said the Department of Housing Preservation and Development has cited the 27-unit, five-story building for 378 open violations, including 20 for mice and rodent infestation.

An Omaha man murdered his daughter, her husband and two grandchildren on Sunday, then committed suicide

Authorities said Richard Wilkinson, 62, shot himself after mortally wounding his daughter, Jamie Lee, 26; and killing her husband, Darrell Lee, 35; grandchildren Michael Wilkinson, 6; and Jacob Shinabarger, 3.

Relatives said the victims had been living at the home, which belonged to Wilkinson and his wife, for about six months.

Police said the violence involved domestic issues.

Jamie Lee lived long enough to be taken to a local hospital, but died there.

(Peyton) Strickland, an 18-year-old college student, was shot as New Hanover County's Emergency Response Team, a SWAT equivalent, raided his house to arrest him in connection with an attack in which another teenager was hit with a blunt object and robbed of two PlayStation 3s. Strickland, who was unarmed, was shot through his front door after Christopher Long, one of the deputies, mistook the sound of the team's battering ram for shots, authorities say. An investigation into the shooting is continuing.

LEXINGTON, S.C. - A 44-year-old mother accused of forcing her two daughters into prostitution to feed her crack cocaine habit remained in jail Monday, along with three men charged with having sex with one of the teens.

The mother, whose name has not been released by authorities to protect the daughters' identities, was being held on $60,000 bail on charges of unlawful neglect of a child, committing an obscene act and promoting prostitution of a minor.

The mother, who was arrested Friday, and the men face charges related to a now-15-year-old daughter, who was forced over the past year to have sex with men after her older sister left their house. Police say the older daughter, who is now 17, was forced to work as a prostitute for four years before fleeing the home.

Authorities said some of the accused men paid the mother $60 to engage in sex acts with the younger girl.

Michael Roscoe, 31, and Jim Finley, 28, are being held on $200,000 bail. Jeremy Futch, 29, was being held on $205,000 bond. The three who were arrested Sunday are each charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and criminal solicitation of a minor.

Thieves in Vermont targeted the home of a young cancer patient while he was undergoing treatment in Boston.

NewsCenter 5's Mary Saladna reported Thursday that Jeff Cota is currently recovering from surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. The 17-year-old high school basketball star has osteosarcoma -- bone cancer in his leg.

While teammates and even opponents have rallied to his support, they are now outraged over news that Jeff has been victimized by thieves.

Jeff's sister, Katie Cota, discovered the crime when she came home from work on Sunday. His new XBox 360 and more than $1,000 worth of games and DVDs were missing from his room.

Police said that they believe the suspects who broke into the Georgia, Vt., home had been in the home before and knew that Jeff had cancer and was in Boston getting treatment.

When a local radio station shared Jeff's story Thursday, it was swamped with callers making donations to help Jeff and replace his stolen property.

One listener purchased a new Xbox 360 for Jeff and dropped it off at the radio station.

A little boy has died after being subjected to a knife attack near Jönköping, southern Sweden, on Thursday lunchtime. A 27-year-old man was later arrested at his home on suspicion of being the attacker.

The boy, reported by Expressen to be 8 years old, was said by witnesses to have been stabbed several times.

The man is said to have started arguing with the boy. He then hit him, before pushing him to the ground and subjecting him to a knife attack.

The man was said to have then stopped attacking him for a while, then continued stabbing the boy until he died. He then left the scene.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon police described the attack as "random", adding that there did not appear to be any relationship between the boy and his attacker.

"The perpetrator is known to the police. He was sentenced to psychiatric care in 2004 for arson. He was released from psychiatric hospital on 27th November 2006," said police investigator Lennart Wernblom.

Three young brothers were tortured in front of their parents before all five were mercilessly slain and their Dutchess County home set on fire to cover up the murders, it was reported yesterday.

Manuel "Antonio" Morey, 13, and his brothers, Adam, 10, and Ryan, 6, were tortured last week as the killer or killers - possibly part of an organized-crime ring - demanded money, Fox 5 News reported last night, citing sources close to the investigation.

Manuel "Tony" Morey, 33 and his wife, Tina, 30, were found shot to death in their fire-gutted Fishkill home on Friday.

Adam and Manuel were fatally stabbed, and Ryan died of blows to the head.

Cops hunting for clues believe the killer or killers may have suffered "struggle wounds" in the violent murder spree and yesterday scouted area hospitals in case they had turned up seeking treatment.

"We are checking regional hospitals for people that have burns or lacerations to the hands or arms," state police Sgt. Robert Hogan said.

He also asked the public to alert cops if they knew of someone who had recently bandaged hands or cuts or burns.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) -- At an age when most children might be preparing for their first day of school, Srey, 6, already has undergone trauma that is almost unspeakable.

She was sold to a brothel by her parents when she was 5. It is not known how much her family got for Srey, but other girls talk of being sold for $100; one was sold for $10.

Before she was rescued, Srey endured months of abuse at the hands of pimps and sex tourists.

Passed from man to man, often drugged to make her compliant, Srey was a commodity at the heart of a massive, multimillion-dollar sex industry in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

"It is huge," said Mu Sochua, a former minister of women's and veteran's affairs who is an anti-sex trade activist.

The precise scale of Cambodia's sex trade is difficult to quantify. International organizations -- such as UNICEF, ECPAT and Save the Children -- say that anywhere from from 50,000 to 100,000 women and children are involved. An estimated 30 percent of the sex workers in Phnom Penh are under the age of 18, according to the United Nations. The actual figure may be much higher, activists say.

A Buffalo teenager who said he killed and slowly dismembered his mother over several days at the urging of the 50-year-old man who was sexually abusing him was sentenced Monday to six months in jail.

Angel Rosa, 16, pleaded guilty in June to a first-degree manslaughter in the death of Madeline Irene, 46, whose head and hands were found encased in cement in a garbage can at the 50-year-old's home after other body parts were found floating in a nearby river.

Psychiatrists for both the prosecution and the defense determined Rosa was emotionally under the control of Edwin Gimenez, a convicted child molester who was his co-defendant in the homicide.

Gimenez, a convicted pedophile, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for convincing Rosa to kill his mother.

Rosa had been accused of mixing drugs into his mother's food and drink and strangling her. The indictment said Gimenez allegedly worked with the teen to dismember and dispose of the body.

SYOSSET, New York (AP) -- As police searched for the killers of a couple whose young sons found them shot dead in their home, family friends and relatives said they were mystified by the slayings.

Nassau County police identified the victims as Jaspal Singh, 46, and Geeta Singh, 38.

Their sons, 12 and 13, came home from school expecting to be greeted by their mother, but nobody answered the door, police said. They said the boys used a spare key to get in and found their parents' bodies.

The boys ran to alert a neighbor, said Michael Moore, 13, who lives across the street.

"They were saying, 'How could this happen to us?"' he said.

Police said the children were staying with relatives. Local schools planned to offer grief counseling to students Wednesday.

(KMOV) - A central Missouri mother is behind bars this morning after allegedly hiding her newborn baby in a closet for nearly a week.

Police in Boonville say Latonya Nichols, 32, never let anyone know she was pregnant for fear of losing government assistance.

The baby is in critical but stable condition.

She's charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Nichols also confessed to a similar incident when she lived in Mississippi.

That baby died two weeks later and Nichols reportedly buried the child.
